For my birthday this year I was given a beautiful bottle of Saint Germain from my friend Ilanna. Saint Germain is an elderflower liqour that tastes citrusy and sweet, with only subtle flower hints. It’s lovely. Especially when mixed. Ilanna said it goes well with gin. I found a recipe for a variation on the classic gin & tonic. It was wonderfully refreshing, and light, and became my summer anthem of 2019.
A couple of things you should know about Saint Germain:
- Most liquors don’t go bad, but Saint Germain is made without preservatives, so be sure to finish the bottle within 5 months (that shouldn’t be a problem).
- Saint Germain is very sweet. A little goes a long way.
- An elderflower is a pretty, white, starry flower that is edible obviously, or else this would be a whole different post.
Saint Germain Gin & Tonic
Ingredients
- 2 oz. Gin
- 1/2 oz. Saint Germain
- Tonic Water
- 1 Lemon Peel for garnish

Fill a Libbey glass with ice. Set aside. Fill a cocktail shaker up with ice. Pour in the gin and Saint Germain. Stir until you fingers feel very cold against the sides of the shaker. Strain into your Libbey glass. Pour the tonic water up to the top. Rub a lemon peel around the rim of the glass, and then drop it into the cocktail. Cheers!
